THE CASE FOR A CESAR CHAVEZ BIRTHDAY FEDERAL HOLIDAY

In analyzing the merit of calling for a nationally recognized federal holiday on the birthday of Chicano activist Cesar Chavez, we felt it necessary to examine the history of the movement that led to the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a national holiday. We know that the push for MLK’s federal holiday began immediately after his death, but did not take off as a bill or become law for many years thereafter. The resistance to such a movement is justified since the company that MLK or Cesar Chavez were to keep with that recognition were the likes of George Washington and
