THE CASE FOR A CESAR CHAVEZ BIRTHDAY FEDERAL HOLIDAY

In analyzing the merit of calling for a nationally recognized federal holiday on the birthday of Chicano activist Cesar Chavez, we felt it necessary to examine the history of the movement that led to the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a national holiday. We know that the push for MLK’s federal holiday began immediately after his death, but did not take off as a bill or become law for many years thereafter. The resistance to such a movement is justified since the company that MLK or Cesar Chavez were to keep with that recognition were the likes of George Washington and

CESAR CHAVEZ FEDERAL HOLIDAY BILL BEING PROPOSED

Chicano Channel Magazine (CCM) believes this bill and subsequent law is overdue. For Chicanos and other Latinos there is not another human rights activist who accomplished as much as Cesar Chavez did and actually his actions advanced human rights for everyone. There are those few persons in our lifetime who so genuinely believe and work to perfect the human race, all the time sacrificing themselves in so many ways that they deserve to be held up and recognized down generations.
