CHICANO CHANNEL: HAS THE USA MATURED TO ACCEPT GAY MARRIAGE?

It’s come a long way, gay marriage, with even the Vice-President of the United States saying on “Meet the Press” this past Sunday, that he “is absolutely comfortable” with gay marriage and believes they should have the same rights as all married couples.  The Secretary of Education for Obama also said he supports gay marriage, on the “Morning Joe” show this morning.  This graduates the official U.S. stance to that of most advanced, western nations and to a point that simply faces reality and attempts to end another form of discrimination.

Chicanos generally were taught, perhaps more harshly than most other cultures, to be discriminatory against gays even while having to fight against discrimination of ourselves.  The “macho” factor definitely played and still plays a part in our psyche.  But as the USA matures, so do we and most of us all now know not only gay persons, but gay couples and gay families.  By all accounts, the children raised in these environments meet and even exceed the expectations of children raised in traditional households, rebuffing the main argument against gay marriage, which was that the kids would somehow grow up complete freaks.
