CHECKMATE

            President Obama and the Democrats are in a good groove at this time, their numbers with Women, Independents and Chicanos are pulling away into double-digit leads nationwide.  Rush Limbaugh helped by calling law student, Sandra Fluke, a “slut” and a “prostitute”, simply because she testified about the medical necessity of contraception before Congress.  Obama played chess with the Republicans when he made the comment that he would apply his healthcare initiative, free contraception and preventative care for all women, to the Catholic Hospitals.  He knew he would take the initial heat for that, he also knew he could later extend the exception to them, but most importantly, he knew he could count on the Republicans to overreact and they did.

            Rush starts yelling “slut”, Republican lawmakers began forging legislation to ban contraception altogether, holding hearings before Congressional Committees on women’s issues, but only inviting old men to testify about it.  That began the political gender gap that is now being reported on and which also is linked to Independents and Chicanos flocking to Democrats.  Of course it also does not hurt that again last month, 237,000 private-sector jobs were created, that the Dow again hit the 13,000 mark for the first time since 2008, that Obama successfully dialed down the War rhetoric with Iran and was actually praised for his peace efforts by the Ayatollah himself.  After his execution of Osama Bin Laden, no one will mistake his peace efforts for appeasement.
