Big Dan - The Next Big Thing in Chicano Rap

I’ve always liked that West Coast rap game, but haven’t heard anything with that cool Cali flavor in a long time.  It’s the kind of music that makes you just want to cruise the day away.  Then I heard Big Dan, who some call “the next big thing in Chicano-Rap”.

“All or None” is the latest album out by Big Dan and I have to admit that he is what Chicano-Rap has been missing.  Don’t get me wrong, there are many amazing Chicano-Rap artists, but if anybody takes this genre to another level, you can bet that Big Dan will be that person or one of them. Big Dan has that educated flow.  He keeps his message real and meaningful, not gang-banging, up-in-the-club or “making it rain” nonsense. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t dance to his music, because you can. For example, “Till the Mornin” and “Crackin” (the latest single off the album) are definitely songs you can groove to in a club or at a party.

“Mi Tierra” was the first single off the album and features Los Novillos del Norte which is a clever mix of Hip-Hop and Musica Norteña.

Chingo Bling brings the Third Coast to the album in “Lentes”.

“Redefining Love” is a track that is reminiscent of some of Tupac’s more tender, poetic work like “Dear Mama”.  Speaking of poetic, Big Dan has a spoken word track entitled “Women Warrior”, which is an ode to women, especially the women in his life.  Also just like Tupac, Big Dan doesn’t let the politics and censorship that comes along with being in the music industry, get in the way of what he has to say and he doesn’t let it define him.
